DIY Belaggles
Spring 2013
What are belaggles you may ask? And I'd answer, you're pronouncing it wrong. Sheesh.
Belaggles, short for belay goggles, probably spelled wrong, are a great invention for reducing the strain in a climbing belayer's neck as he/she ensures the safety of his/her climber. I was all psyched to get my own until I saw this:

Dude, my neck is not worth $120, let alone the $10 for shipping and handling.
But then I remembered seeing some inspection mirrors on McMaster-Carr. They're actually the perfect size for sticking right under your eyes and looking at climbers, and best thing is they're cheap! $3 apiece, which means I can have my own belaggles for $6+printed ABS plastic. So I bought a few and went about designing an attachment to my stylish sunglasses.

I realized I needed something to keep the two mirrors aligned, hence the middle piece. Also, the ball joints allow for adjustment of the angle and position of the mirror. It can then be tightened down through the holes in the connecting rod. I'm bad at describing things, so I'll post a picture as soon as I have one.
First Print Done
Looks pretty much like the CAD. It works well, but I think the linkages are a little excessive. My initial thought was that it'd be nice to be able to adjust it as a 4 bar linkage, but now it looks like I could just get away with a hinge on the bottom of my glasses, which I'm going to try next!
